Frequently asked questions
What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are tags added to a URL that allow analytics tools to track the source, medium, and campaign of website traffic. They are used to measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns in tools like Google Analytics.
What is campaign source vs medium?
Campaign source (utm_source) identifies where the traffic comes from — e.g. google, facebook, newsletter. Campaign medium (utm_medium) describes the marketing channel type — e.g. cpc, email, social. Together they tell you 'this visitor came from Facebook via a paid social ad'.
Do UTM parameters affect SEO?
UTM parameters do not directly affect your search rankings. However, if UTM-tagged URLs are indexed by search engines, they can dilute link equity. Use canonical tags pointing to the clean URL to prevent indexing issues.
How do I track UTM links in Google Analytics?
In Google Analytics 4, UTM parameters are automatically captured and shown under Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. The data appears within a few hours of traffic hitting your site.
